Polar bear attacks woman who jumped into enclosure at Berlin Zoo

In the spring of 2009, a 32-year-old woman, Mandy K., jumped into the polar bear enclosure at Berlin Zoo during a feeding session. Initially, the bears were focused on their food, but one bear noticed her and attacked. Visitors watched in horror as she tried to escape but was pulled under multiple times. Zookeepers responded quickly, using life rings and distractions to rescue her. She was hospitalized with injuries but survived.

Mandy K. was struggling with personal issues, including job loss and a breakup. Authorities stated she endangered herself and others. The zoo confirmed no changes to security, citing that determined individuals could always find a way in.
