A close friend of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa revealed the heartbreaking reason Hackman couldn’t call for help after his wife’s death. The couple’s decomposing bodies were found in their Santa Fe home, and initial speculations included carbon monoxide poisoning or foul play. Investigations later confirmed no foul play but revealed tragic circumstances.
Arakawa died of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, while Hackman, suffering from Alzheimer’s, was left alone, unable to understand his situation. She had been his primary caregiver, managing his safety and needs, but after her death, Hackman became disoriented and unable to seek help.
Hackman’s lack of interest in technology and not owning a phone made it impossible for him to call for assistance. His Alzheimer’s worsened his condition, and one of their dogs, Zinna, was found dead as well. Their passing highlights the vulnerabilities of aging and illness.
