Marquise Vanzego, a Black Chick-fil-A customer from Maryland, expressed outrage after discovering a racial slur printed on his receipt during a drive-thru order. On August 23, 2024, Vanzego was shocked to find the word “Monkeys” instead of his name. He had ordered in person, not through an intercom, and initially thought the name called out by the employee couldn’t possibly be his. When the employee confirmed his order, Vanzego was left feeling humiliated.
He sought clarification from a manager who apologized and refunded his order. Later, Vanzego shared the incident online, where reactions were mixed. The franchise owner also apologized but explained the employee, a minor, simply wrote what he thought he heard. Vanzego stressed the need for accountability, expressing concern over the lack of consequences for the employee’s actions.
