Renowned actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Autopsy reports indicate that Arakawa succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome approximately on February 11, while Hackman died around February 18 from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease as a contributing factor.

Investigations revealed that Arakawa was last active on February 11, running errands including visits to a veterinarian and a pharmacy. After returning home that evening, there was no further activity from her, leading authorities to conclude she passed away that night. Hackman, due to his advanced Alzheimer’s disease, may not have been aware of his wife’s death and likely continued living in the home until his own death around February 18.

The couple’s bodies were discovered after a maintenance worker reported being unable to access the property. Authorities found no signs of foul play or carbon monoxide poisoning. One of their dogs was also found deceased, while two others were alive on the property.

Gene Hackman was a celebrated actor known for his roles in films such as “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” He retired from acting in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of diverse and memorable performances.
