Premier Doug Ford of Ontario has announced a plan to raise electric bills for thousands of Americans, potentially increasing costs by up to $100 per month. In response, President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency, claiming that Canada’s tax increase on electricity is an abusive action against US citizens.

The trade tensions between the US and Canada are escalating. Trump, retaliating to Ford’s move, announced that he would double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum exports from 25% to 50%, effective March 12. He also plans to substantially increase taxes on Canadian-made cars entering the US next month.

Trump took to Truth Social to express his frustration, stating he would soon declare a National Emergency on electricity in areas affected by the price hike. The regions in question include New York, Minnesota, and Michigan, where Ontario power grids supply electricity. Ford has warned that if the trade war continues, he may stop electricity from flowing to hundreds of thousands of American households.
