Why this female worker wants to ditch her shirt and go topless

The ongoing conversation around gender equality in the workplace has been reignited by Australian landscaper Shianne Fox, also known as “The Bikini Tradie” on social media.

Fox sparked debate by questioning a double standard in workplace dress codes—why can men work shirtless in extreme heat while women cannot?

Fox, a Sydney-based tradeswoman, took to TikTok to express frustration after being told to keep her shirt on while working in 40-degree Celsius (104°F) heat. In her video, she criticized the rule, calling it “sexist” and highlighting the disparity between male and female workers. Fox, who often wears a bikini top to cope with the heat, argued that her request for equal treatment was reasonable and that societal perceptions around the human body need to evolve.

Her stance has garnered both support and criticism. Supporters argue that dress codes should be gender-neutral, and many male commenters on her video praised her for calling out the inequality. On the other hand, critics defend workplace dress codes, emphasizing the need for professionalism and safety standards, which require protective clothing regardless of gender. Some also point out that public toplessness norms differ for men and women and should be respected.

Fox’s position has also sparked division among female tradeswomen. Some feel that her social media presence undermines the credibility of women in the trade industry, with a few expressing that she does not represent them. Despite this, Fox remains committed to advocating for women in blue-collar jobs and hopes her actions will encourage more women to enter the industry, where gender disparity remains significant.

The debate raises larger questions about gender equality in the workplace and the barriers women face in male-dominated fields. Fox sees her advocacy as part of a broader push to challenge outdated norms and make the trades more inclusive for women. The discussion continues to divide opinions—should women have the same topless rights as men, or is this a step too far? Regardless of one’s stance, it underscores the ongoing challenges of gender equality and societal expectations in professional environments.
